Beverages through provenance and innovation

Beverage trends are constantly evolving, with consumers demanding innovative and diverse flavour experiences. We provide a comprehensive range of flavour solutions that cater to these trends.

Types of flavours & provenance
  • FTNF (from the named fruit): FTNF flavours are extracts that are 100% derived from the named source material without additional flavourings added; essentially, an FTNF is an extract. Declared on BOP as “X Extract”, or “Strawberry Extract”. This can also be linked to a specific origin.
  • Natural Flavour (95/5): In a 95/5 flavouring, at least 95% of the flavour components must originate from the named source material, with 5% originating from other natural sources/flavourings and used for the purpose of rounding off or standardising to ensure a consistent flavour profile. Declared on BOP as “Natural X Flavouring” for example, “Natural Strawberry Flavouring”.
  • Natural Flavour WONF (with other natural flavourings): < 95% of the flavour is derived from the named source, with the rest being made up from other natural flavouring substances or preparations. Declared on BOP as “Natural X Flavouring with other natural flavouring”.

Telling a flavour story in beverages

In today’s discerning beverage market, consumers are no longer just seeking a refreshing drink; they’re craving an experience. And at the heart of this experience lies provenance – the story of where ingredients come from.

The Rise of Provenance in Beverages

Consumers in today’s beverage market aren’t simply looking for something refreshing—they’re seeking an experience rooted in meaning and authenticity. Provenance, the story behind where ingredients come from, has become central to that experience. As demand for traceability and genuine sourcing grows, provenance‑driven flavours are reshaping the beverage landscape and capturing the attention of brands and consumers alike.

Provenance flavours go beyond simply delivering a delicious taste. They connect consumers to the source, evoking a sense of place, tradition, and craftsmanship. Whether it’s the sun-drenched citrus of a Sicilian orchard, the delicate floral notes of a Himalayan tea, or the rich, earthy spice of a Guatemalan coffee, these flavours tell a story, creating a deeper connection between the consumer and the product.

Transparency and Trust
Consumers are increasingly concerned about the origins of their food and beverages. They want to know that their products are sourced responsibly and ethically.

Authenticity and Experience
In a world of mass-produced goods, consumers seek authenticity and unique experiences. Provenance flavours offer a taste of something real and genuine.

Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing
Consumers are more aware of the environmental and social impact of their choices. They are drawn to brands that prioritize sustainable sourcing and support local communities.

  • Premiumisation: Provenance flavours often command a premium price, reflecting the higher quality and unique story behind the ingredients.
  • Desire for Connection: In an increasingly digital world, people crave connection to the natural world and to the people who produce their food and beverages.
  • Increased Focus on Sourcing: Beverage manufacturers are investing in supply chain transparency and building relationships with producers in specific regions.
  • Emphasis on Storytelling in Marketing: Brands are using provenance stories to differentiate their products and connect with consumers on an emotional level.
  • Innovation in Flavour Development: Flavour houses are working to capture the unique nuances of regional ingredients and create authentic provenance flavours.
  • Growth of Regional and Craft Beverages: Consumers are seeking out beverages with unique regional flavours and supporting small-scale producers.
